Job Description

Position: School Security Officer

Immediate Supervisor: Security Director

Location: Central Office Itinerant

Employment Term: Minimum 200 days annually, pursuant to WV Code 18-5-45.

Salary: Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-2, in accordance with Mason County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level.

**Maximum number of years that can be carried over rom law enforcement is 10 years

Evaluation: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the Security Director for Mason County Schools in accordance with WV Code, State Board Policy, and Mason County Board Policy.

Job Summary: Provide armed security and safety to students, staff, and visitors on property owned or leased by the Mason County Board of Education.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct support to school administrator(s)/supervisor while on site.
  • Provide security for all occupants of school buildings and grounds.
  • Provide security services for various meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Assist school administrators with threat assessment activities as needed.
  • Coordinate and share criminal intelligence with the Safety Director and law enforcement.
  • Immediately address security equipment malfunctions and report building safety concerns to the Maintenance Director through the work order system.
  • Respond and investigate any action or potential crime involving physical injury or a threat of physical injury to another person.
  • Respond and investigate any action or potential crime involving destruction of school property or property located on school premises.
  • Respond and investigate any act committed that the school safety officer has reason to believe that a person is likely to cause serious harm to himself, herself, or to others.
  • Responsible for ensuring security measures that have been established are being followed by Mason County Schools.
  • May be responsible for planning and implementing crisis training and safety drills.
  • Investigate any potential criminal or education policy violation that is assigned by the Superintendent or Security Director.
Qualifications:

(A) Within ten years immediately prior to being hired by Mason County Schools:
  • was a law-enforcement officer as defined in WV Code 30-29-1 in the state with ten years of aggregate years as a law-enforcement officer; or
  • was employed by a law enforcement agency of the United States or any state or political subdivision thereof and his or her duties were substantially similar to those of a law-enforcement officer as defined in WV Code 30-29-1.


(B) Retired or resigned from being a law-enforcement officer in good standing.

(C) Maintains the requirements of and status as an honorably separated or qualified retired law-enforcement officer within the meaning of the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004, as amended, pursuant to 18 U.S.C. 926C.

(D) Obtains and maintains any certification and training required by the Division of Protective Services School Safety Unit.

(E) Undergoes a background check at his or her expense as required to verify that the candidate is not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing, purchasing, or transporting a firearm.

(F) Active LEOS status including firearms training prior to being hired and continual active LEOS status once hired by the Mason County Board of Education.

The physical demands required are representative of those that must be met by an employee successfully performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, stand, walk, lift, grab, defend, write, talk, hear, see, and use technology such as computers and multimedia equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may encounter high stress situations which require the employee to perform at a high level both mentally and physically.
