Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Per Diem Admitting Representative (Tisch/Rusk all locations). In this role, the successful candidate accurately reviews, obtains and records all pertinent patient demographics and financial information, and provides and explains necessary information to patients to facilitate safe, efficient, and sensitive entry to care, in compliance with applicable standards, while ensuring accurate data are available for subsequent use and each patient encounter.

Responsibilities

  • Understands and performs ethically and effectively within established policies and procedures, in compliance with mandated standards for the Medical Center. Applies relevant policies and procedures for the Medical Center, the division of finance, and Patient Access; adheres to a clear code of ethics and behavior; encourages ethical action in others; ensures compliance with the ethical, regulatory, and accreditation environment; protects patient privacy and rights in compliance with HIPAA and all relevant laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Communicates effectively, courteously, and empathetically with patients, families, and all internal and external customers of Patient Access. Supports a positive patient experience during registration and entry into acute hospital care, including considerations for children and their families, LGBT clients, deaf or HOH clients, and clients with limited English proficiency (LEP). Responds to telephone and in-person requests for assistance with courtesy and professionalism; forwards information to customers via computer, mail, telephone, or fax.
  • Uses good judgment and initiative, adapts to workload variations, takes responsibility for meeting deadlines, and escalates issues to department management when appropriate.
  • Registers patients accurately, completely, and thoroughly. Validates patient identity, reviews information for accuracy, demonstrates effective interview skills, and understands the purposes of data obtained at registration. Understands registration and insurance terminology and reports problems with department processes or technologies.
  • Collects and verifies all necessary financial information for medical center services. Understands how third-party payers provide health insurance and pay for services; gathers and reviews data including insurance cards to ensure correct reimbursement; assigns primary and secondary payers and handles enrollment and authorization processes as needed using online tools or payer websites/phone.
  • Collects patient payments at the time of service in a secure and professional manner; explains terms (self-pay, co-pay, co-insurance, deductible, out-of-pocket limits) and processes payment transactions with receipts and proper records.
  • Uses all appropriate forms for each registration area; provides required information to patients about their hospital experience, rights, and services; obtains signatures and discusses safety and security of valuables and other issues as needed.
  • Delivers effective and sensitive customer service by understanding customer needs, assessing satisfaction, and adjusting service accordingly; knows when to escalate questions or concerns.
  • Completes assigned tasks in accordance with department and medical center standards; manages multiple activities, tracks details to ensure accuracy, identifies quality standards, and reports quality issues for corrective action. Maintains logs and records in an up-to-date and accessible manner.

Minimum Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 12 years of related office or retail experience including direct customer contact and service, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Verbal and reading skills, basic arithmetic, basic computer familiarity, good interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of healthcare registration or billing experience; college degree or coursework

Salary: NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $25.68 per hour. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. This range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.
