Job Title: Grounds Maintenance Worker
Location: City of Charleston, WV
Starting Pay Rate: $12.00 per hour
Number of Open Positions: 7
Anticipated Start Date: June 2, 2025
End Date: August 8, 2025
Hours of Work per Week: 35
Business/Work Hours:

  • 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday (initially)
  • 7:00 am - 3:00 pm (as weather warms)
    Maximum Hours: 35 hours per week
General Description:

The purpose of this position is to implement a variety of community, recreational, cultural, special events, and other programs at designated City of Charleston facilities for youth aged 16 - 20 years. The employment dates are from June 2, 2025, to August 8, 2025, with potential extensions based on employee availability and departmental needs. This position works under close supervision according to established procedures.
Responsibilities, Tasks, and Projects:
  • Operate lawn mowers and weed trimmers for grass mowing
  • Perform general grounds maintenance including litter collection, weeding, mulching, and plant care
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by supervisors
Candidate Requirements:
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work
  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds for extended periods
  • Ability to work in unfavorable weather conditions, including heat and light rain
  • Provide your own lunch, sunscreen, and insect repellent
Dress Code:
  • Clothing suitable for ground maintenance, including boots or sneakers, t-shirts, and long pants
  • Springhill Cemetery will provide safety glasses, hearing protection, work gloves, water, and tick repellent
Additional Qualifications:
  • Ability to provide documentation verifying legal work status
  • Proficiency in reading and speaking the English language to communicate effectively, understand safety instructions, and respond to inquiries
  • Ability to understand and adhere to City and departmental guidelines, policies, procedures, and expectations
