Nature of Work
The Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief will report to the Chelyan Headquarters. Under limited supervision, will act as a working crew leader, leading a crew participating in the maintenance and repair of highways. Investigates citizen complaints to determine the repairs and materials needed. Participates in meetings to determine the assignment of crew members to daily projects and overseeing the completion of work. Completes reports concerning time, materials, and inspection of work done. Will be required to become certified on one or more of the follow types of equipment: hydraulic crane, grader, bulldozer, backhoe, track/rubber-tire excavator, or welding unit. May be exposed to inclement weather and hazardous working conditions. Performs other related duties as required.
The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). However, a Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief is excluded and the applicant will not be placed within a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program.
- In the area of assignment of Crew Chief, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Typical Duties and ResponsibilitiesTransportation Worker 3 - Crew Chief- Leads a crew of transportation workers and participates in maintenance and repair of highways.
- May lead a crew of sign shop employees in the fabrication, location, installation, and repair of highway signage.
- Investigates citizen complaints on roads and inspects highways to determine needed repair work.
- Assists in scheduling of maintenance and repair projects.
- Coordinates equipment and material needed.
- Assigns duties to crew members and leads crews in the completion of projects.
- Completes all required reports concerning time and attendance, materials, equipment, and inspection of work.
- Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required.
- In the area of assignment of Crew Chief, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.
Required Skills and Knowledge• Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
• Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
• Knowledge of the operation of motor driven equipment.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
• Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
• Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
• Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating ventilation and cooling systems.
• Ability to climb high steel structures.
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Required Education and ExperienceREQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Crew Chief: Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway construction or roadway maintenance, or in bridge or structural steel construction comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways.
Crew Chief Experience Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) year of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.
